Rah! Rah! Roundup

If you read Soleil Ho’s piece this week mourning “Yi-Fen Chou, the Chinese American woman poet who doesn’t exist,” then you might find some welcome comic relief in #WhitePenName Generator.

For those of us who can’t attend every international film festival, there are now at least 100 Latin American Films available for free streaming courtesy of the Buenos Aires Film Festival! I know what I’m doing this weekend.

I’m feeling pretty inspired by Maria Berriozábal, the first Latina to serve as a city council member in my hometown of San Antonio, Texas. Now in her 70s, she hasn’t slowed down a bit where fighting for social justice issues are concerned.

This article says that Burger-A-G0-Go “gives women in rock their due” but then I also see an article focusing only on the clothing style of Burger-A-G0-Go and I’m pretty sure we will still have a long way to go. Yawn.

“… if a woman takes off her clothes I think it becomes about her body or feminist, political art. Whereas if a man gets their jocks off for a laugh they’re not called performance artists… people think ‘what’s happened to her, she’s vulnerable.’ “– Comedian Adrienne Truscott

“It’s pretty much a given that when a woman is disliked, for whatever reason, the first thing people do is attack her appearance. Plenty of people supporting marriage equality are not above this.”– From the Advocate’s piece, Kim Davis Deserves Criticism But Not for Her Looks

Janelle Monáe continues to be “a vocal supporter of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.” Monáe recently performed at a protest against police violence in Portland. Listen to her protest song here which lists the names of “black Americans killed by police and vigilantes, followed by the phrase ‘say his name’ or ‘say her name.'”

This Morgan Parker poem is really helping me get through a rough week.

To all the Pacific Northwest labor movement “troublemakers” reading this: there’s a conference happening for you this weekend to hone your skills,”talk strategy, build solidarity and recharge.”

Tom Tom Magazine creator and publisher Mindy Abovitz will be giving a talk on gender and music on September 17 in NYC.

What did we miss this week? Let us know in the comments! <3
